The Iowa Institute for Social Action (IISA) is a leadership training
event for people of faith residing in the four Catholic dioceses in Iowa. Various speakers and workshops enable attendees
to become better advocates on social justice and peace issues in their local communities as well as throughout the world.
The IISA is an annual two-day event that traditionally coincides with the Sunday and Monday in January that
honors the life and achievements of Martin Luther King Jr. The 2009 event will be on Sunday, January 18th, and Monday, January 19th at St. Francis of Assisi Church in West Des Moines, IA.
The keynote speaker on Sunday will
be Antonio Cube, the national manager for the "Justice for Immigrants" campaign of the United States Conference
of Catholic Bishops. Featured on Monday will be a panel from Postville, Iowa, the site of a large immigration raid in 2008.
The event is sponsored by the Iowa Catholic Conference, Catholic Charities, the Archdiocese of Dubuque,
and the Dioceses of Davenport, Des Moines and Sioux City.
